Interactive Learning The Three-Step Model and the Case Method
Successful management depends on effective decision making, and effective-ness involves two factors: knowing which are the right things to do and doing them in an efficient way. The case method, applying acquired knowledge to practical case examples, and the three-step learning model are practiced during the whole MBA program, in order to train team work and effective decision making. Step 1: Individual work Through individual study the participants acquire the basic knowledge of the subject treated. Then they study case examples which are descriptions of real up-to-date management problems. They analyze the given information and suggests justified solutions, putting themselves in the position of a consultant or a manager who has to take a decision. Step 2: Group Discussion Participants then meet in small groups (5 to 7 members) in order to discuss the cases previously prepared. The aim of this exercise is to train team work, developing the ability to interact and collaborate effectively with others, learning from each other and at the same time contributing to symbiotic results. Active participation therefore is essential. This is especially exciting and challenging in multi-cultural groups in which participants have diverse personalities and professional back-grounds. Step 3: Class Discussion The different groups then meet in class for a more formal discussion under the guidance of the professor. One group presents its findings, and justifies them in an open discussion. While group meetings focus on solution finding, class discussion emphasizes optimizing suggested solutions. The professor has the role of a guide and catalyst rather than a teacher, contributing with his particular expertise and business experience.
Lectures and case studies are the backbone of SIU´s learning system, however other elements are added, as for example: conferences of guest speakers, videos, formal reports on case examples or particular subjects, real case projects, computer applications and visits to companies.
