New Test of English Language for International Students
Pearsons Language Test (PLT) is a new international, entirely computer based English language test set to hit the markets by the end of 2009. The test aims to compete with the two major English language tests, TOEFL and IELTS. Like its competitor products, the Pearsons Language Test aims to test English language abilities in four key areas: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Fully computer based, this new test sets out to give test takers more flexibility in test delivery and technologies to provide more detailed information and to enhance the testing experience. It is essentially scenario based and is designed to allow students the freedom to express themselves, thus testing the students’ ability within the framework of real-life situations. The test is offered at six levels: Foundation, Elementary, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate, Advanced and Proficient. The number of higher education institutions worldwide accepting the test is growing, with many business schools and MBA programmes already committed to accepting the test as an official measure of English language competence. The test is additionally endorsed by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC). Pearson Language Tests is part of Pearsons plc, an international education and information company. While TOEFL and IELTS provide the most internationally and widely accepted English language testing service, a new entrant to the English language test market provides a welcome addition to the international education sector in that it provides a greater choice for English language test takers in demonstrating their English language skills to universities and business schools. How widely the Pearsons Language Test will be accepted by universities around the world is yet to be seen when the test is officially launched in October 2009.
