US Universities decrease PhD admissions
A number of universities in the United States have announced that they will admit less PhD students to their programmes this fall. The cuts have primarily been brought on by financial considerations as the economic downturn hits the higher education sector. Universities such as Emory, Columbia University, Brown University, New York University and others have made changes to their PhD application numbers, from 40 percent to 10 percent cuts. While the number of PhD applications is on the rise overall, the fact that PhD students are more likely to be supported by tuition waivers and scholarships makes it difficult to support a large number of PhD students, particularly when departments are faced with budged cuts.
